Canadians left exposed to threats from Trudeau Government’s delays banning Huawei from Canada’s 5G networks

May 19th, 2022

TORONTO – Conservative Leadership Candidate Scott Aitchison made the following statement in response to the Trudeau government finally joining our Five Eyes allies in banning Huawei and ZTE from Canada’s 5G network:

“Canada being dragged and shamed into banning Huawei from Canada’s 5G networks is yet another example of Canada being an unreliable partner on the world stage. Justin Trudeau’s dithering on this national security matter put Canadians at risk and was irresponsible.”

“While Justin Trudeau delayed this decision, Huawei deployed more than $700 million of their gear into Canadian networks.”

“Today I think of the Nortel pensioners and all other victims of Chinese espionage who were let down by their government. Canada must do better in the future.”

“A Conservative government I lead will implement my Real Leadership on The World Stage plan to protect Canadians, invest in our national defence, and restore Canada as a reliable partner on the world stage. My cabinet will undertake a comprehensive security assessment to review any security threats this delay has caused and move swiftly to address them.”
